Patient Transport Guidance

Your Journey With Us

Clear guidance for non-emergency patient transport and mental health transfers across England — from booking to a safe return home.

Non-Ambulance Transport

Non-Emergency Patient Transport Explained

Uplift Centre provides planned, non-emergency patient transport for people who need help getting to and from healthcare appointments, hospital admissions, discharges and ongoing treatments.

This service is for patients who cannot travel by public transport or drive themselves because of their medical or mobility needs. Our crews support seated journeys, wheelchair transfers and stretcher moves, with vehicles and training matched to each booking.

We work with hospitals, clinics, GPs and families across our region so journeys are organised calmly, with dignity and clear communication at every stage.

Before You Travel

Booking and Eligibility

Know how to arrange transport, who the service is for, and what to have ready when you call.

How booking works

Transport may be arranged by your hospital or clinic. If you need to book yourself, call our team on 01268916754 or use the contact form. A booking adviser will confirm your appointment details, mobility needs and the right vehicle for your journey.

Who is eligible

Non-emergency patient transport is for people who, because of a medical condition or mobility need, have no suitable alternative way to reach their appointment. It is not a substitute for public transport or private car when those options are safe and available.

Have this ready when you book

  • Full name, date of birth and contact number
  • Home address with postcode
  • Appointment date, time and hospital or clinic location
  • NHS number (if you have it) and GP surgery name
  • Mobility needs — walking aid, wheelchair, stretcher or clinical support

Once confirmed, keep your booking reference safe in case you need to change the journey.

What To Expect

Step by Step Through Your Journey

Every booking is individual, but most journeys follow these stages so you know what happens next.

Step 1

Picking You Up

  • Your adviser confirms the expected collection time — please be ready so other patients are not delayed
  • Crews carry identification and collect you from inside your home where needed
  • Help with coats and boarding, plus a check that your home is secure and you have your keys
  • Bring any medication you need, plus a drink, snack or something to read if you wish
Step 2

Your Journey

  • Before setting off, the crew confirm your appointment details and seat you safely
  • During the trip they check you are comfortable and at ease
  • Speak up if anything feels unclear — your safety and dignity come first
Step 3

Arrival at Your Appointment

  • The crew help you leave the vehicle and escort you into the building
  • You are taken to the right clinic or department
  • If you arrive before the unit opens, you will not be left waiting alone
Step 4

Getting Home

  • When treatment finishes, hospital or clinic staff can let us know you are ready to return
  • We allocate a vehicle as soon as we can and collect you from the clinic or discharge area
  • The crew settle you for travel and make sure you are safely indoors and comfortable before they leave

Travelling With Support

Escorts and Mental Health Transfers

Space on patient transport is prioritised for people with a medical need to travel. A friend or relative may accompany you only where it is clinically or safeguarding-appropriate — for example parents or carers of children under 16, carers of patients assessed as vulnerable, or escorts agreed during booking for medical need.

For specialist mental health journeys we provide trauma-informed, clinically overseen transport designed to be calm and as least restrictive as possible. Ask our team when booking if this pathway is right for you.

Road Safety & Dignity

Every journey begins with a mobility and comfort check. Crews secure equipment, explain the route in plain language, and keep the cabin calm so patients travel with dignity from door to door.
